The Phanom Rung Sanctuary is one of the most beautiful and important Khmer historic sites in Thailand. It was built in sandstone and late rite during the 12th century A.D. and is set on top of Phanom Rung Hill in the North-Eastern Thailand with a panoramic view.

Phanom Rung is the original name and is mentioned in stone inscriptions excavated in this area. It is a religious sanctuary dedicated to the Lord Shiva, the supreme Hindu deity. It symbolizes Mount Kailasa, the heavenly abode of Shiva.

Thailand's Department of Fine Arts spent 17 years restoring the complex to its original state from 1971 till 1988. On 21 May, 1988, the park was officially opened by Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn. In 2005, the temple was submitted to UNESCO for consideration as a future world heritage site.
