Danga Bay is a very popular destination with the locals and visitors to Johor Bahru. Cooled by balmy sea breeze and a breath-taking view of the Straits of Johor with a wide selection of restaurants and cafes as well as parking lots, Danga Bay could not have been a better choice for the International Orchid Show 2007 to be held in an ambience of flourishing lights as night falls. The show opens daily from 25th May- 3rd June from 8.00 a.m. to 10.00 p.m. and admission to the show is for FREE. Little is known but Johor is the world’s second largest exporter of orchids. These are cultivated in 470 hectares of commercial farms where one can catch sight of the vast array of orchid species in all its shapes, sizes and over 80 species of rare and exotic ones with international recognition for some of the hybrids registered with the World Orchid Society in London. With more than 25,000 known species of orchids and more being discovered daily, orchids are the largest group of plants on earth. With the recognition as the most highly evolved plants that come in many shapes, sizes and colours ranging from miniature ones that can only be viewed with a magnifying glass to giants that weighs tons and grow vines up to 100 feet, the orchid farms are an attraction for orchid lovers. The Menteri Besar of Johor, Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman and his wife, Datin Dr Jamilah Binte Ariffin are both avid orchid lovers and two hybrids from the genera Ascocenda and Renantanda were named after them respectively in 2004 and 2002. Come 25th May, visitors to the International Orchid Show that goes on for a week to 3rd June will be even more enthralled with the sights of thousands of orchids put up on show by over 200 participants from over 20 countries from around the world; Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, Japan, China, Australia, South Africa and even as far away as from European countries of Denmark, Italy, Germany and Switzerland, to name but a few. There will be 800 species on display of which 600 will be from Malaysia. In an effort to project Johor as a destination for world-class international flower shows and events and attract enthusiasts from around the world, Johor Bahru City Council (MBJB) which is jointly organising the Johor International Orchid Show with the State Government, Johor Tourism Action Council and the Johor Orchid Society and are sparing no efforts to make the show in a setting at Danga Bay to make it befitting of a world class one indeed. The organisers are also going all out to make this event a memorable one and don’t be surprised to see the streets, shopping malls and hotels transformed into a showcase of orchids as in the main exhibition centre of Danga Bay. Various species of orchid from all over the world will be displayed in a profusion of breathtaking colours to make you feel that you are in the Garden of Eden for that one heavenly week.
