Ah Ma (Singapore) by Anthony Chen @ Bangkok International Film Festival 2007The 23-year-old young Singaporean film-maker Anthony Chen film-maker, whose short film Ah Ma won a Special Mention award at last month's Cannes Film Festival will be featured in the 5th Bangkok International Film Festival in July. The Bangkok International Film Festival is held annually since 2003 by the Tourism Authority of Thailand, a Royal Thai Government agency, in Bangkok, Thailand. Celebrities and film stars from Asia and from the international film making community are expected to arrive in Bangkok in July to enjoy a 10 day extravaganza of film and cinema. The emphasis is very much on the quality, direction and production of the entries for the festival The ASEAN countries will have their own special category, and there will also be special sections devoted to the Greek cinema and legendary French filmmaker Luis Bunuel. In other categories there are awards to be made for documentary films and short film features. As ever, the Bangkok International Film Festival has attracted a wide range of entries from across the globe. There are confirmed entries from the USA, the UK, Japan and Korea. Thailand will naturally be represented strongly with a number of productions in drama, and romantic comedy. There’s no doubt that visitors from Kuala Lumpur would be keen to see the array of films, but there are also going to be workshops and, as in all the great film conventions, a good deal of buying and selling. This is the place where a filmmaker can be catapulted to fame, or left wondering why his epic didn’t catch the eye of the distributors. This aspect, the Bangkok Film Market will be held in one of Asia’s finest shopping locations, The Siam Paragon, whilst the featured films will be shown at the brand new Central World Shopping Centre This year’s festival has more than 100 feature and short films from over 30 countries, ranging from prolific filmmaking countries to emerging industries from countries such as France, India, Vietnam, Sri Lanka, Singapore, Portugal, Poland, Peru, Canada, Greece, etc. Golden Kinnaree Award is a highlight of Bangkok International Film Festival. For 2007, there are three sections of competitions: International Features, ASEAN Features, and Best Short Film. Additionally, the festival also bestows the honorary award such as the Lifetime Achievement Award.
