During the presentation of joint media statement, the ASEAN Secretariat represented by Dr. Surin Pitsuwan and the United Nations’ World Tourism Organisation represented by its Secretary General Francesco Frangilli, signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to ensure both organizations will take the necessary steps and devise appropriate measures to encourage more cooperation and sharing of information.

In realizing the plan of turning ASEAN to become a single destination, member countries realized they would have to work hard in many areas of development. Ministers acknowledged some tasks in tourism manpower, facilitation of travel, cooperation in crisis communications, and cooperation with international organizations, among others, await their shared efforts in making their dream of a unified ASEAN come true.

As an ASEAN member having encountered years of slump in tourist arrivals, Indonesia is pleased with tourism results in 2007. H.E. Mr. Jero Wacik, Minister of Culture and Tourism, Indonesia revealed that last year the country saw 5.5 million visitors and hoped 2008 would be even better. Certainly through concerted efforts among ASEAN members, Indonesia will benefit from the region’s various joint tourism promotions.
