1. Excerpts from Teo Chee Hean, Minister for Defence:

This Year we celebrate our 43rd year of independence.

Singapore has been built by enterprising and hardworking people who have come from near and far to sink their roots here and make Singapore their home. In 40 years, Singaporeans have built a world-class nation. Shared experiences through good as well as difficult times have shaped our society into one that is cohesive and resilient.

Our people have worked hard to make Singapore a dynamic, progressive country; one we are proud to call our home. Our “can do” spirit is seen in how determined we are to purse our hopes and dreams, how we stay united through challenges, and how we work together to excel as one people. These are the qualities that make up our Singapore Spirit – the key to our Success.

Our progress as a nation has also been possible because we have peace and security, allowing us to turn our dreams into reality. We have a strong SAF to protect our country.

Every Singaporean can contribute to the strong foundation that our forefathers have laid for us. We must continue to be vigilant, help one another, upgrade our knowledge and remain united when faced with challenges. We must all be involved in Total Defence. Each of us can make a difference in ensuring that our loved ones and our country remain safe and secure, as we build a better tomorrow with a strong Singapore Spirit.

2. Transcripts of school-children (audience) watching the NDP 2008:

I feel that it is going to be very exciting because this is the first time I ever seen. It is like a show about Singapore and Water. This is my first time at the National Day Parade 2008. I have never been there before. This year, for a change, they are holding it at marina bay instead of Padang so all my friends should be very excited about it.

I find it very interesting to come here. All primary 5 come here every year to watch the National Day Parade. It is a very patriotic event. I really enjoy watching it. I am very happy that they provide food and they give us free good goodies bag, hat and umbrella to protect us from the sunrays.

There will be a lot of greeting and learning experience.

I love the fireworks; it is fun and exciting to watch the firework. It is very colourful and all.

I am very happy to be here at Marina Bay as compared to watching it on television at home. It is really a very good feeling to be here finally. I am also very proud to be here as I just changed my citizenship last year. You are here to feel the spirits of the performers.
