National Day Parade 2006

On 9 August 2006, Singapore celebrates 41 years of nationhood. National Day Parade (NDP) 2006 promises to be a spectacular and meaningful celebration of our nation as 'Our Global City, Our Home'. This theme portrays Singapore as a vibrant cosmopolitan city and an international hub that is plugged into the global community. As a global city, Singapore today offers numerous opportunities and many different paths to success. This is a place where Singaporeans live, work and play and is the place where we bring up our families and are proud to call Home.

2. This year, NDP will be held at the National Stadium for the last time. It is a day-to-night event, comprising four segments: the Pre-parade, Parade and Ceremony, Show and Post-Parade segments.

a. The Pre-parade segment serves to encourage spectators to arrive early for NDP. There will be carnival-style activities to warm up the spectators and rouse them into a celebratory mood.

b. The second segment on Parade and Ceremony showcases the precision, vitality and discipline of the marching participants, who represent the five pillars of Total Defence.

c. Special multimedia audio and visual effects will be employed in the Show segment to create an emotive and meaningful experience for spectators at the stadium as well as for television and webcast audiences. The Show features various items to showcase Singapore as 'Our Global City, Our Home' as well as our sub-themes ‘Our City of Colours’, ‘Our Island of Opportunities’ and ‘Our Nation of Hopes and Dreams’.

d. After the Show segment, the Singapore Armed Forces' (SAF) Music and Drama Company, with several guest artistes will stage a concert to thank the thousands of NDP 2006 participants for their great effort and hard work.

3. NDP 2006 celebrates our unity in diversity, where people of all races, cultures and religions work and live together harmoniously and share common aspirations to forge a better life for all. We will showcase the energy and optimism of our people as we look forward to a promising and sustainable future. Most of all, we seek to awaken the latent patriotism in all Singaporeans, and to imbue us with a sense of belonging, knowing that Singapore is and will always be our Home.

4. The NDP 2006 Executive Committee comprises members from both the public and private sectors and is led by the SAF's Chief Guards Officer, Brigadier-General Goh Kee Nguan.
