| National Day Parade 2006 |
New twists to old traditions The Parade and Ceremony (P&C) segment of National Day Parade (NDP) 2006 will see several firsts and creative adaptations to the parade format and layout. While retaining the essence of parade traditions, discipline and precision in execution, the new adaptations promise a delightful touch of the old and new. A key anchor of every NDP, the P&C segment provides a nostalgic link to the commemoration of our nation’s independence over the past 41 years. Singaporeans of different generations could reflect on our nationhood as they share in their favourite moments of the parade that has given a traditional feel to our National Day celebrations. Chairman of NDP 2006 Parade & Ceremony Committee, Colonel (COL) Koh Teow Huat said: “We hope to present a memorable parade that expresses vitality, military precision and discipline. While the parade format will be familiar to everyone, we have made changes to some elements to give the parade a different feel.” Highlights of the parade This year’s P&C segment, timed to fall from dusk to nightfall, will feature the following: a. A mobilisation siren and multimedia clip will signify the start of the P&C segment. The marching contingents will double-in in cadence to the beat of music from the Combined Band onto the parade ground from six entry points. b. The army contingents will transform into the formation “2006” to showcase military precision and provide uniqueness to the parade layout. c. The Guard-of-Honour (GOH) contingents will fire the Feu-de-Joie (Fire of Joy) in a fanning out formation as a variation to the usual formation. d. Traditional highlights such as the Presidential Inspection, 21 Gun Salute, GOH March-past and aerial display will continue to be featured. e. The marching contingents will carry out a parade finale item as a transition to the Show segment. This year’s P&C segment will feature several ‘firsts’ in NDP history – the first-ever female GOH contingent commander, the use of the Singapore Assault Rifle (SAR) 21 by the GOH contingents and the new variation to the Feu-de-Joie celebratory firing. Parade contingents The 24 marching contingents this year are formed by organisations representing the five pillars of Total Defence, including the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF), the Singapore Police Force (SPF), the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF), Uniform Youth Organisations (UYOs) from schools, private sector and grassroots organisations. Together, the five pillars of our Total Defence – Military, Civil, Economic, Social and Psychological Defence – work together as part of a comprehensive strategy to safeguard Singapore’s security. They bring together all Singaporeans to defend the country against any kind of threat, whether security, economic or social. A total of about 3,500 participants will be involved in the parade. Among them will be first time participating private organisations, Motorola Electronics Pte Ltd and PropNex Corporation Pte Ltd, representing Economic Defence.
