MICE players honoured at the inaugural Singapore Business Events Awards

The Singapore Tourism Board announced on 2 August 2007 the seven winners of the inaugural Singapore Business Events Awards at a gala event held at The Ritz-Carlton Millenia Singapore. Selected by an international panel of judges, these winners are recognised for their exemplary business and service excellence, creativity and innovation across the different segments of the meetings, incentive travel, conventions and exhibitions (MICE) industry.

The Singapore Exhibition and Convention Bureau (SECB), a group of the Singapore Tourism Board (STB), is the lead agency championing the interests and development of the business events industry. The SECB developed the Awards to profile Singapore as a leading destination for business events through showcasing the professionalism and skills of the business events industry. The Awards recognise the industry’s contributions that have reinforced Singapore’s standing as a premier business travel and MICE destination.

Seven awards in four categories were awarded to outstanding MICE industry players ranging from Professional Conference Organisers (PCO), Professional Exhibition Organisers (PEO), Destination Management Companies (DMC), venues (such as exhibition/conference venues, hotels), freight forwarders and other related companies such as stand contractors, AV, production and staging companies. The winners were selected for their ability to create a difference for their event or the services their organisation offers to MICE organisers. Successful marketing resulting in strong event attendance, creative experiences for event delegates and careful attention to clients’ needs were some of the hallmarks that set the winners apart. (For more information on the winners, please kindly see below)

The winners were selected out of the 21 finalists who were shortlisted for the seven awards. The finalists and winners were selected by a judging panel consisting of 16 industry experts, association and academic leaders, and representatives from the corporate sector. The international panel of judges lent a global and multi-faceted perspective to the Awards and nominees. The judges spent hours of intense discussion to evaluate the entries and selected those who conclusively demonstrated the strong results of their efforts. The Awards entries were assessed on how innovative they had been in organising business events and how their level of service and expertise had exceeded clients’ expectations. Nominees were also assessed on how their event or company has contributed to raising Singapore’s profile as a MICE destination.

Business Travel and MICE is identified as one of the key drivers of tourism in Singapore, with visitor arrivals constituting approximately 28 per cent of total visitor arrivals and 35 per cent of total tourism receipts (TR) or SGD 4 billion in 2006. The STB aims to raise the contribution of the BTMICE sector to SGD 10.5 billion while maintaining its overall proportionate share of total TR.

“I would like to congratulate the winners of the inaugural Singapore Business Events Awards. They have done the industry proud with the events they have organised and the services they have provided. It affirms the passion of the industry for the work they do. Their professionalism and dedication to service quality, and proven ability to exceed clients’ expectations, while delivering exceptional and innovative business events deserve recognition. The Awards is an industry development initiative of the SECB. We would like to encourage the industry to continue to strive for even higher standards as event organisers and suppliers. The winners of the Awards will serve as torch-bearers for the Singapore and regional MICE industry, setting the bar for future award recipients and inspiring excellence in the industry. Their contributions will help to raise Singapore’s profile as a premier MICE destination,” said Mr Aloysius Arlando, Assistant Chief Executive, Business Travel and MICE Group, Singapore Tourism Board.

The MICE industry partners have been supportive of the Awards. “Kingsmen is very elated to be the first to receive the Service Partner Excellence Award from STB. The award is dedicated to our clients and business partners for their full trust and support since our inception more than three decades ago. We shall continuously find ways to further improve our services and offer them no less than the world-class quality service that Kingsmen is known for. Finally, I would like to congratulate STB for this successful gathering of industry players to collectively celebrate and raise the standards of service excellence in the Singapore MICE industry,” said Mr Anthony Chong, Executive Director, Kingsmen Exhibits Pte Ltd.

Some winners of the Awards, such as the Singapore Society of Anaesthesiologists which hosted the 12th Asian Australasian Congress of Anaesthesiologists (AACA) in November last year, welcome the boost that the accolade will give to their efforts to bid for bigger and more impactful events. “As the winner of the Convention of the Year Award at this inaugural Singapore Business Events 2006 Celebration, the Society is now more confident to bid and host the much larger World Congress of Anaesthesiologists in the near future. We like to thank Singapore Tourism Board and our trade sponsors for their continuing support and encouragement,” said A/Prof Chan Yew Weng, Senior Consultant Anaesthesiologist, Department of Anaesthesia and Surgical Intensive Care, Singapore General Hospital.
