Clipper fleet on round the world yacht race to sail into Keppel Bay

Homecoming Uniquely Singapore Clipper hosts ASEAN contingent onboard

Singapore will welcome the Clipper 07-08 Round the World Yacht Race fleet with a grand ceremony at Keppel Bay, which will also celebrate the homecoming of the Uniquely Singapore Clipper on 19 January 2008.

The international fleet of 10 ocean racing yachts sailing in from Fremantle will make a stopover in Singapore from 19-27 January 2008 enroute to Qingdao, China. Their arrival will lend colour and excitement to the opening of Marina at Keppel Bay to be graced by Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong, who will also present the Uniquely Singapore Cup to the winning Clipper sailing in from Fremantle.

This is the second time that Singapore is fielding an entry in the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race. The main sponsor of Uniquely Singapore for the current race is Keppel Corporation Limited, together with race partner, the Singapore Tourism Board.

“The international following and goodwill that the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race brings will help promote Singapore’s attractiveness as a leading sailing and boating destination in Asia and an ideal place in which to Live, Work and Play.

“Keppel is delighted to contribute to the vision and vibrancy of this southern waterfront with Marina at Keppel Bay where premium berths and facilities stand ready to host yachts up to 200 ft and international events such as the Clipper 07-08 Round the World Yacht Race,” said Ms Wang Look Fung, General Manager of Group Corporate Communications, Keppel Corporation Limited.

“The Singapore Tourism Board (STB) views the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race as a platform to showcase the Uniquely Singapore brand to the world and to promote Singapore globally as a "must visit" destination through the Uniquely Singapore yacht and its crew. As roving tourism ambassadors for Singapore, crew members will be able to share with the rest of the world, Singapore’s vibrant blend of modern sophistication and rich cultures as well as to encourage them to come to Singapore to enjoy the many unique personal experiences that await them,” said Ms Winnie Pua, Director, Brand Management, Singapore Tourism Board.

Uniquely Singapore is helmed by Skipper Mark Preedy whose present crew includes two Keppel Ambassadors as well as an ASEAN contingent. The participation of the ASEAN Crew is supported by the Singapore-ASEAN Youth Fund and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Singapore (MFA) in celebration of ASEAN’s 40th Anniversary.

On the ASEAN Clipper contingent project, Mr Jacky Foo, Director-General of ASEAN-Singapore said, "Such people-to-people projects, whereby young people from ASEAN member countries get a chance to interact closely with one another, will help youths from ASEAN understand one another better. We hope that more of such activities will help to promote greater ASEAN awareness, as well as allow our youths to identify not just with their individual countries, but also with the region."

Gearing up for a grand ceremony is presently underway at Marina at Keppel Bay on Keppel Island where Singaporeans and visitors alike will catch the majesty of the Clipper fleet as they enter the mouth of the Bay.

On the Singapore stop-over, Sir Robin Knox-Johnston said, “Singapore has been a significant stop in all six Clipper Races and we are delighted that once again there is a boat proudly carrying the name of Singapore around the major ports of the world. The race has proved an excellent way to illustrate the maritime and commercial strengths of this vibrant country.”
