The National Neuroscience Institute (NNI), a national specialist referral centre for the care and management of neurological diseases seeks to raise funds for its Health Endowment Fund (HEF). Proceeds and contributions to the HEF are channeled to needy, indigent patients who do not qualify for Medifund aid and require financial assistance for their medications, medical equipment and surgical procedures.

In the spirit of caring for the community and its relentless support of the less fortunate afflicted with debilitating neurological illnesses, the NNI will offer a pair of fine stoneware plates in a silent auction to raise funds for the NNI -- Health Endowment Fund.

Created and donated by Mrs Mavis Oei, the pair of porcelaneous stoneware plates is specially signed by Minister Mentor and Mrs Lee Kuan Yew.

Estimated at S$68,000 -- 88,000, the plate that bears MM Lee Kuan Yew’s signature features a carved peony motif, finished with a light celadon glaze. Mentioned in the Book of Odes (9th century BCE) the Herbaceous Peony is one of the earliest documented Chinese flowers and ranks as the "prime minister" of all Chinese flowers.

The second plate, with painted motifs rich in symbolism depict the 4 seasons -- Winter: the famous "3 friends of winter" -- pine, bamboo and the plum; Spring: the cherry blossom, emblematic of perseverance, purity and longevity; Summer: the pomegranate symbolizing abundance and fertility; Autumn: the health-giving properties of the chrysanthemum. Measuring 30 centimeters in diameter, this plate is hand-thrown and glazed, and signed by Mrs Lee Kuan Yew.

A Silent Auction of the pair of plates will be conducted on 27 April 2006. The NNI appeals to corporations and the general public to raise funds for the Health Endowment Fund to benefit the needy through a Silent Bid Form or donations.
