MEMBERS ONLY
Don’t miss MEMBERS ONLY, a funny and fast-moving play which gives you a rare opportunity to look into the intricacies of male friendship. What do men talk about? What are their relationships based on? And, most of all, how does it feel to be left out?
Nathalie Ribette (Jacques Brel is Alive & well & living in Paris) has gathered a stellar cast : Lim Yu-Beng (Best Actor in the 2005 ST Life! Theatre Awards for his role in The Lover and The Dumb Waiter) and Daniel Jenkins (twice the Best Supporting Actor Award at ST Life! Theatre Awards in 2006 for his role in Quills and in 2007 for his role in Cabaret) and an award winning director Tracie Pang (Nominee for Best Director – ST Life! Theatre Awards 2007 for The Pillow Man).
Originally entitled in French “Cravate Club” (“Tie Club”), the play premiered in Paris in 2001, was turned into a film in 2002 and enthralled critics in London in 2006: “the theatrical absurdity of exaggerated emotions have realistic dimensions embedded in humour (…) which have the audience rocking.” British Theatre Guide.
Bernard (Daniel Jenkins) and Adrien (Lim Yu-Beng) are lifelong friends and partners in an architect firm. Their relationship seems very "tied" up but on what foundations? It is Bernard's 40th birthday. But Adrien cannot come because he has a big night at his club. The two friends embark on an absurd and thought provoking argument that will have you gripped to your seat throughout.
Bernard is a man who superficially has everything that is deemed successful in our society: a wife and children, and a good business. Yet his all-consuming jealousy towards Adrien reveals how fine the line can be between friendship and love when it comes to exclusivity. In contrast is Adrien’s character, who is single and on his own. Belonging to a club, for him, is paradoxically a way to escape social constraints. It is his very little space of freedom where he can be who he wants to be.
Between these two architects their suffocating relationship can lead to no good. To build a tower of friendship so high will only result in a more fatal fall.
