The Cantonese Music Lingers On….
Two nights of all-Cantonese music await audiences this March as the Singapore Chinese Orchestra (SCO) presents The Cantonese Music Lingers On. Bringing together the renowned vocalist Liang Yu Rong, gaohu performer Li Zhao Fang and composer-conductor Li Fu Bin, the concerts promise to engage ardent fans while providing new audiences a taste of the rich traditions of Cantonese music.
“With Cantonese music known for its rich and colourful style, we’ve programmed a concert that features many well loved compositions and new arrangements. To satisfy our diverse audiences, the works will range from those featuring the full orchestra, to lyrical gaohu solos, vocal music and even a rousing piece from the percussion section,” said Terence Ho, General Manager, SCO.
Drawing from its origins in folk music and Cantonese opera, the programme features many classic melodies in Chinese instrumental music. For example, Autumn Moon over a Placid Lake 《平湖秋月》, depicting the beautiful scenery of West Lake( 西湖)and arranged for this concert by Li Fu Bin, is often described as one of the best Chinese music compositions of the 20th century. Other works include the exquisite and heart-tugging The Alluring Span of the Peacock 《孔雀开屏》, as well as Silver Clouds Chasing the Moon《彩云追月》, an all-time favourite.
The orchestra will be led by Li Fu Bin, arguably the most skilful conductor and composer in contemporary Chinese Orchestra. At 36, he is the current conductor of Guangzhou Xing Hai Conservatory of Music and has conducted, composed or arranged many excellent musical works. Most of the works featured in the concerts for SCO are arranged or orchestrated by him.
For the first time, selected concert rehearsals will be open to the first 50 Friends of SCO. Another activity SCO fans can look forward to is a pre-concert talk on 6pm, Mar 7, in the SCH practice room on level 2, host by NAFA president Mr Choo Thiam Siew. Guest speakers are the stars of “The Cantonese Music Lingers On…” - Liang Yu Rong, Li Zhao Fang and Li Fu Bin.
