| Buddha Tooth Relic Temple and Museum |
A tooth relic of Buddha now in SingaporeSingapore has one more attraction. A construction of a Buddhist temple in the middle of the historical centre of Chinatown has been completed. The building has been designed in the traditional style of the Tang Dynasty (618-907) and also comprises among others a museum with Buddhist artifacts. The Tang Dynasty is seen as the „golden age“ of Buddhist art in China. However, the actual attraction is a tooth relic of Buddha. It is placed in a two meter high stupa made of pure gold. The „Sacred Buddha Tooth Relic Chamber“ is located on the 4th level of the building. Buddhist texts reveal that Buddha left behind four wisdom tooths and 40 tooth relics for the succeeding generations. Due to the religious significance of temples with relics they played an important role in spreading Buddhist beliefs. The Buddhist Cultural Museum in Buddha Tooth Relic Temple is a Museum showcasing exquisite pieces of art depicting the history of Buddhism in the Southeast Asian Region. It has the generous support of the Singapore Tourism Board and local Buddhist community. The Buddhist Culture Museum is located on the 3 rd level of the temple founded by Chief Monk Shi Fa Zhao. It is the Museum’s vision to be the Buddhist cultural hub of the region. The Museum’s collection includes stone, teracotta, bronze, silver and gold figurines of various important Sanghas, Protectors, Bodhisattvas and Buddhas in Buddhism. The collection also showchases precious depictions of various stages of the Buddha’s life through Tibetan Tankas, rare paintings and sculptures. For visitors to the temple who like to bring home a BTRTM souvenir, the Tang Shop offers a wide range of unique and exclusive gifts. The Buddha Tooth Relic Temple and Museum was officially opened in May 2007 with an orchid hybrid Dendrobium Buddha Tooth named after the Temple on display at the rooftop garden.
