The Community Psychogeriatric Programme @ Changi General Hospital
“Dementia = the progressive decline in cognitive function due to damage or disease in the brain beyond ageing.” Official Launch of Community Psychogeriatric Programme @ Changi General Hospital The Community Psychogeriatric Programme (CPGP) is a community outreach programme developed under the Psychogeriatric Service of the Division of Psychological Medicine at Changi General Hospital. This programme, funded by the Ministry of Health under the National Mental Health Blueprint, aims to improve the mental health of elderly living in the Northeast and Southeast community districts. In Singapore, mental health problems such as depression and dementia are identified in the elderly. The National Mental Health Survey showed the prevalence of dementia in those aged above 60 to be 5.2% while the prevalence of depression was 3.1%. By the year 2030, it is projected that the figure will swell from the current 8.3% identified cases to 19% in correlation with the numbers of living elderly increasing from 306,500 (in 2006) to 794,000. CPGP aims to increase the awareness of psychological disorders in the elderly (termed as psychogeriatric disorders) through public education and the provision of mental health screening for the elderly. The home-bound elderly will receive a timely mental health service provided by the hospital. CPGP will empower general practitioners and community eldercare agencies with the knowledge and skills to enhance the provision of care to older persons with mental illness through trainings and support to facilitate early detection and interventions of mental health problems in the elderly. The pilot phase of the CPGP (in 2007) will cover the Northeast and Southeast community districts and be extended to the entire country by year 2010.
