The Kampong Glam Hari Raya Light-Up 2008

The Kampong Glam Hari Raya Light-Up has established itself as one of Singapore's national festive celebrations. Organised by the Jalan Besar Group Representative Constituency (GRC) Grassroots Organisations (GROs), the official launch of the Kampong Glam Hari Raya Light-Up 2008 was held on Sunday, 24 August 2008.

Mr Wong Kan Seng, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Home Affairs was the Guest-of-Honour for the event and the event was also graced by Mr Heng Chee How, Minister of State, Prime Minister's Office and Adviser to Whampoa GROs, Dr Lily Neo, Adviser to Kreta Ayer-Kim Seng GROs, Ms Denise Phua, Adviser to Kampong Glam GROs, Mr Zainudin Nordin, Mayor of Central Singapore District and Mr Zainal Abidin Rasheed, Senior Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and Mayor of North East District and Chairman of the Malay Heritage Foundation.

Themed as 'Hari Raya @ The City”, the month-long event which will run from 24 August to 28 September 2008, aims to bring people from different ethnic groups together to have a better understanding of the Malay/Muslim culture.

Visitors can participate in activities such as 'lftar' or the breaking of fast, at 7pm daily at the compound of the Sultan Mosque and Muscat Street and 'Guess the Number of Ketupat' competition featuring different types of ketupats. Other highlights include a 'Food and Goods Bazaar' along Kandahar Street and a “Photo & Video Competition”.

Visitors can also watch an array of colourful performances such as the traditional Malay dance, Silat and Kompang by the multi-talented performers from various community clubs at the Malay Heritage Centre every weekend from 5.30pm to 6.30pm. A special 'Interactive Ramadan Awareness Exhibition' and a 'Demonstration on Ketupat Weaving' will further let visitors understand how the Malay/Muslim community observe the Ramadan and give people of different races and religions a better understanding of the Muslim culture.
