Hari Raya Aidilfitri 2007@ Kampong Glam & Geylang Serai

Hari Raya Aidilfitri is one of the most significant celebrations for Muslims. It marks the end of the fasting month of Ramadan (or Bulan Puasa” in Malay) and is a time of abstinence, contemplation and worship for Muslims.

This year, the streets of Kampong Glam and Geylang Serai will be lit from 8 September to 21 October. Visitors are in for a treat with colourful festive bazaars offering traditional handicraft, clothes and accessories, numerous food stalls offering traditional Malay fare and cultural performances being staged at various venues. This will be a great time for visitors to gain cultural insights and immerse themselves in the tradition of this important Malay Muslim celebration.

Ramadan Shines at Malay Heritage Centre

During Ramadan, Muslims are expected to put more effort into following the teachings of Islam Including the noble deed of giving. The third pillar of Islam, which is fasting, is practiced during the month of Ramadan.

With the coming of Ramadan from 13th September to 12th October, Malay Heritage Centre (MHC) will be introducing a new initiative in aid of its Heritage Fund. The Ketupat Amal or Charity Ketupat hopes to seek support from the community by pledging and donating during the Ramadan period.

Official launch of the Charity Ketupat was held on 15th September.

Aimed to preserve the Malay culture and heritage, each pledge will cost $2.00. At the end of the campaign, the total number of pledged ketupats will be cooked and donated to the needy.

To complement the Charity Ketupat, other exciting programmes includes cultural performances, food and handicraft bazaars, Ramadan awareness exhibition, Ketupat Weaving demonstration, Khat Calligraphy demonstration and also Dates sampling. Visitors will also have the opportunity to experience the breaking of fast in the Centre, including enjoying the special Ramadan porridge and dates, which forms the usual breaking of fast staple amongst Muslims.

Jalan Besar GRC will be presenting cultural performances from 5 different constituencies including Kallang . Malay Dance/Silat and Kampong Glam .Kompang.

The objectives of the Ramadan Shines at Malay Heritage Centre are:-

  • To reach out to the non-Muslims/tourists/Malay youths and educate them on socio-economic practices carried out during Ramadan in an entertaining and light-hearted manner.
  • To increase awareness on significance of Ramadan
  • To promote racial harmony and share with the needy as well as the under privileges.
  • To discuss the do’s and don’ts during the month of Ramadan. This will inculcate respect for cultural, racial and religious diversity.
  • To give an insight into how Muslims prepare for Hari Raya Puasa – which marks the end of the fasting month of Ramadan.

As part of its other initiative to reach to the needy, MHC will be organizing a breaking of fast with the under privileged together with the media groups on 6th October. Local artistes and celebrities will be invited to participate in the occasion.

Hyrul Anuar, the 2005 Anugerah Winner, who is also the ambassador of the Charity Ketupat, will be making special appearances on the 15th September and 6th October.
