Mid-Autumn Festival Light-up Ceremony 2006

Festivities abound this Mid-Autumn Festival in Chinatown as spectacular street lighting and decorations promise to light up the evening skies, setting a magical backdrop for entertaining performances and a bustling bazaar.

The Guest-of-Honour, President of the Republic of Singapore, SR Nathan, officially launched the Chinatown’s Mid-Autumn Festival and the street light-up on 23 September 2006. Besides a colourful street procession consisting 18 contingents and 600 participants, the public was captivated by the Singapore Book of Records “Largest Dancing Lion” measuring 6.8 metres in length and 1.7 metres in head width and manned by 8 persons. The evening rounded off with a stunning pyrotechnics and fireworks display.

This year’s street light-up is by far the largest and most extensive. The month-long street light-up will run from 23 September to 15 October and will feature brightly coloured lanterns and impressive decorations based on the legendary Mid-Autumn Festival story of Chang Er, or the Lady of the Moon, who floated to the moon after swallowing her husband’s elixir of eternal life. Catch a glimpse of her beautiful moon palace and garden with the dragon gates all recreated along New Bridge Road and Eu Tong Sen Street. The street light-up also revolves around the moon palace’s, bird sanctuary and garden, allowing visitors to admire the flowers beautifully decorating the streets of Chinatown.
