Evolution of Chingay

Chingay started in Singapore in 1973 and was instrumental in replacing festive noises after firecrackers were banned in 1972. The first Chingay procession was totally Chinese, with a potpourri of prancing lions and bigheaded dolls. It was so well received by Singaporeans that it became an annual event. To date, Chingay has evolved to be the grandest parade in Asia showcasing the rich, vibrant multi-culturalism of Singapore and exciting cultures from all over the world.
