Hungry Ghost Festival (7th Month Festival) @ Chinatown

1-01.jpg

This month-long festival (1st to 30th August 2008) is known as the Hungry Ghost Festival (also Zhong Yuan Jie in Mandarin) and takes place during the 7th lunar month. It is believed that during this time, souls are released from Purgatory to wander the earth for a month.

This festival is celebrated by stakeholders in Chinatown yearly. Activities would include Taoist monks chanting, preparing ritualistic food offerings and burning incense and joss papers for the visiting spirits. On 12th Aug 08 (Tue), there will be a praying ritual procession around Chinatown.

As part of the celebrations of this festival, a getai and dinner will be held on 13th Aug 08 (Wed), with auction of goods. Many would bid for these items in the hope and belief that they would, in year ahead, bring prosperity to them.
