Chinatown Chinese New Year Celebrations 2008 Street Light-Up
19 Jan – 24 Feb 2008
Eu Tong Sen Street, New Bridge and South Bridge Roads
7pm – 12mn (Sundays to Thursdays)
7pm – 2am (Fridays & Saturdays)

In line with the Year of the Rat in 2008, the Light-Up along the main streets of Chinatown will feature Disney icons such as Mickey and Minnie Mouse, and other Disney characters playing in a Spring Garden filled with plum blossoms and lanterns.

There will also be sales of 4,000 exclusive Disney plush toys via on-line as well as at Chinatown Heritage Centre, Kreta Ayer Community Centre, Kim Seng Community Centre and at selected Festive Street Bazaar from 19 Jan while stocks last. The proceeds will go to the Kreta Ayer Kim Seng Children Education Fund, to reach out and meet the needs of children from disadvantaged families.

To complement the main light-up, intimate photo opportunities and interactive displays will be incorporated throughout Chinatown at focal points such as the Garden Bridge.

Chinatown Chinese New Year Celebrations 2008 Official Light-Up and Opening Ceremony
19 January 2008
6.30pm – 10.30pm

The Chinatown Light-Up was officially launched by Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong with a record-breaking lion dance display of 368 lions. Other than firecrackers and pyrotechnics, the ceremony featured cultural street performances with large screen displays to allow the public to have a better view of the celebrations. Visitors joined the locals along Eu Tong Sen Street and New Bridge Road to take part in the festivities.

Beside, a family of four cute, cartoon-like robotic mice namely the Daddy (1.63m tall), Mummy (1.54m), Boy-boy (1.40m) and Girl-girl (1.32m) mouse greeted the crowds with auspicious slogans and entertained them with popular Chinese New Year songs.

International Lion Dance Competition

This will be the second year that the Lion Dance competition was organised, and the first year that it was done on an international level, with the participation of countries such as Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, China and Taiwan.

Festive Street Stall

Over 500 festive stalls promises to enthral visitors with a dazzling array of festive goodies such as waxed duck, barbecued sweet meats, cookies, fresh flowers and traditional CNY decorations galore.

Nightly Stage Shows

Visitors can expect invigorating local and overseas cultural performances at the Kreta Ayer Stage. This is a popular gathering point to observe the locals, and also where the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple and Trishaw Parks are situated.

Chinatown Chinese New Year Celebrations 2008 Countdown 6 Feb 2008, 9.30pm onwards

This year’s countdown event in Chinatown will be telecast live on Channel 8. The event will feature a host of MediaCorp artistes and stage performances. For the first time, the organiser will try and break the Singapore Book of Records with the largest number of confetti canons firing at the stroke of mid night as we welcome the Year of the Rat. A whopping 100 confetti canons will explode along Eu Tong Sen and New Bridge Road. Adding to the excitement of the evening are firecrackers and spectacular fireworks to mark the beginning of the Chinese New Year.

Chinatown Yuan Xiao Jie
17 Feb 2008 8 pm to 10.30pm

Visitors can enjoy the highlights from the Chingay Street Parade as 10 beautifully decorated floats and performers make an appearance at Chinatown. There will also be a strong programme line-up with overseas and local performances.

There will also be other “Yuan Xiao Jie” celebrations at the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple and Museum and Thian Hock Keng Temple. Please refer to the below for more details.
