Ritu Kumar – The Ritu Kumar Label Line

Leslie Kuek (336x280)

Ritu Kumar – Fall Winter 2008: Ritu Kumar is India’s foremost designer who has built up a strong handwriting using Indian craft traditions and its textiles. The brand has been known for its indigenous inspiration and its classical style for the last 40 years. The designer started her work in the 60s and till today is one of the most popular brands in India. It is the first time that the designer is showing her collection in Singapore with her sub brand called THE RITU KUMAR LABEL line. This is a departure from the classical Indian styles and is aimed at a young international contemporary audience. The collection promises excitement, as the design house goes into state of the art silhouettes bringing freshness to the collection. The use of non conventional bold prints in body hugging shapes gives it a contemporary through intrinsically organic appeal.

There are interesting mood swings which are at variance with each other, yet retain a commonality which gives it its identity. A strong line which sends out a young image with sophistication elegance and ease, the fabrics include jersey, silk chinon, satin and indigo Khadi all styled together in a semi-formal look. The label collection puts emphasis on free flowing drapes and engineers these into shapes that exude a wispy quality. The emphasis is on using the inherent fall of the fabrics used in garments with a freedom to take their own shape and emphasize movement.

The collection opens to an indigo and white collection, which is simplistic in shape, modern in its patterning but uses reflective surfaces of mirror work embroideries to highlight its minimalism A departure from the Ritu Kumar classics which are known for their intricately drawn ambi patterns, in the LABEL LINE large abstract, sweeping paisleys in indigo hues bring in a modern twist to the old motifs. The rest of the collections draw heavily on the tantric motifs seen in the length and breathe of India. A new breeze seems to have blown through the design house, as these ancient motifs have been rediscovered and put into forms for the young contemporary woman of today.

The finale will see florals done with the company’s expertise in prints in such a way that they seem as if they have sprung out of an artist’s palette in a kaleidoscope of colour. Clinging jersey is what gives the collection its edge as the curtain falls on the new Ritu Kumar label line which has been a designed by Ritu Kumar in conjunction with her son Amrish Kumar, who is a young designer and also heads the creative side of the design team.
