- DesignSingapore brings fashion and product designers together in a collaborative showcase of Singapore’s design capabilities

Six fashion designers and nine product designers showcase their first collaborative feature presentation that transcends the traditional boundaries of design at the Singapore Fashion Festival.

Titled “Blueprint 2008”, this DesignSingapore studio project is a cross-fertilisation of ideas between fashion and product designers. It explores the melding of two design disciplines, resulting in creations sparked off by the fashion works.

In this collaborative project, the 15 designers have been divided into five groups, each with product and fashion design capabilities, they are:

  Fashion Designer Product Designer
Group 1: Ben Wu, TIAN Jason Ong, JIENSHU
Group 2: Nic Wong, NICHOLAS Jarrod Lim
Group 3: Jay Quek
Madeline Wong, POSSE
Wendy Chua
Gabriel Chan
Gustavo Maggio
Sebastian Alberdi, OUTOFSTOCK
Group 4: Chia Wei Choon, ANTEBELLUM P.C.Ee, EXIT Design
Group 5: Desmond Yang, ABYZZ Brian Law and Tan Sixiu, CRISP DESIGN

The collaboration will produce more than 10 original works by these innovative, cutting edge designers. The immersive creative process will see the emergence of new design ideas on the runway that encapsulate rethinking of interpretations. By sharing influences and building on their collective design skills, the designers connect to produce a multi-dimensional showcase.

The project aims to raise the awareness of design capabilities in Singapore and profile Singapore designers and their works. The intent of the showing is also to generate marketing opportunities for the designers by connecting them with businesses.

“This is an exciting large-scale project where fashion and product designers will come together to share ideas. Instead of focusing on their expertise in a specific field, we have taken them out of their comfort zones and presented them with an opportunity to extend the boundaries of design. By leveraging their design competency and strength in different disciplines, a new creation is formed. This fusion of capabilities greatly enhances the design landscape in Singapore. We hope to see more such design collaborations in the near future,” said Dr Milton Tan, Director of DesignSingapore Council.

Following this exclusive premiere in Singapore, this presentation will be making an international presence at the Milan International Furniture Fair from 16 to 21 April 2008. The cultural exchange between the Italian and Singapore design community serves as another platform to raise Singapore’s prominence in the global design landscape.
