About the DesignersAbyzz is a derivation from the word ‘abyss’. Abyss is the deepest part of the ocean where no man could venture. There are life forms that men have never encountered. Abyzz is a reflection of such mystery and uniqueness. It has a timeless appeal while always embodying some refreshing twist. Desmond Yang’s wizard of fusions seamlessly blends edginess into his classic form-fitting pieces which exude a sense of uncontrived elegance. Desmond unique design won numerous fashion competitions such as the Smirnoff International Fashion Awards in 1998 and 2000 Desmond’s superb tailoring ability has enabled him to be very versatile. The smart-casuals and club-wears are trendy, edgy and some multi-functional. Desmond is just as comfortable in designing fun cocktails as well as sleek evening dresses. With much international appeal, abyzz is sold in stores in the regional countries well as in New York, USA. Intended for the intellectuals of the new millennium, abyzz is for women of discernment who are unafraid to revel in who they are. They demand outfits that not only enhance their silhouette, but at the same time leave a lasting impression. Find out more about his collection from www.abyzz.com.sg Vicky Tay, the electrical engineering graduate is the founder and creative brain behind Burgundy. Being fascinated by fashion at an early age, Vicky had an option to study fashion design but elected to study engineering at London’s Imperial College. Graduating with first class honours, the electrical engineer-turneddesigner decided to pursue her love of fashion instead. Having not been formally trained in fashion design, Vicky credits her mother for influencing her tastes in fashion adding that her mother’s love for luxury brand’s like Ferragamo guided her towards her design direction – a classic, minimalist timeless look. Vicky Tay, who is entirely in charge of the companies creative decisions, says she bases her decisions mostly on intuition. “There is no big concept, or theatrics behind the designs, it is simply a feeling of what women want,” says Vicky of her creative ideology. Harry Halim, Indonesian-born, is only 21 years old, but he is already making waves in the industry. He recently clinched the top prize at Asian Young Fashion Designer Contest 2006 and 1st runner up at Singapore Fashion Designer Contest 2006. Before that, he came in as a finalist in Mercedes-Benz Asian Fashion Awards 2006, Singapore, and Asian Young Fashion Designer Contest 2005. Since young, the Singapore-based had been interested in arts & designs. Before stepping into Fashion Designing, he studied graphic design and photography in Limkokwing University of creative and technology in Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur. Halfway through, he made the switch to study Fashion Design with Lasalle-SIA College of the Arts. While in school, he applied his classroom knowledge at Divine Couture Bridals, where he was an assistant designer. He was one of the top students with best graduate’s collections. Upon completion of his studies, he joined Celia Loe as a designer. Currently Harry works for Australian-US brand Aussino, and apply his design flair on SINO label. After the winning, he plans to launch his very own label, harryhalim, during Singapore Fashion Festival 2007. The label, harryhalim is concentrated on the details works, in technical aspects and construction. Making ample use of fabrics, draping techniques, twisting, pleating, playing around with the layers of sheer fabrics in different textures. The design of each garment is dynamical, undulating and flimsy but structured. With a BA(Hons) from Raffles Design Institute, Hiroko has participated in various fashion awards and events, both locally and internationally. Her past participation in competitions such as Smirnoff Experience Singapore/London Graduates’ Fashion Showcase (2002), International Women’s Wear Design Contest (Shanghai, 2002), and Singapore Young Designers Contest (2003) has prepared her with a strong foundation for her winning at the Mercedes-Benz Singapore Fashion Award 2005. Prior to winning the award, Hiroko held the post of fashion designer at SONG+KELLY21. In pursuit of the dream to create a label of her own, and crafting ideas into objects of desire and beauty, she has opened a boutique under the name UENO in December 2006.
