Singapore to host prestigious IBSF World Billiards Championships 2007Singapore will take another step forward as a regional sports hub, by being the first Southeast Asian country to host the International Billiards and Snooker Federation (IBSF) World Billiards Championships 2007. The IBSF is the organisation that governs non-professional snooker and English billiards around the world. The tournament will be hosted at the Orchid Country Club, from 5 to 14 September 2007. The organiser, Cuesports Singapore, is expecting more than 40 players from 15 countries including Australia, England, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Myanmar, New Zealand, Scotland and Vietnam to take a shot at the trophy. The prize purse for the tournament is US$8,000. Participants will be competing for two category titles – the ‘Traditional Time’ format’ and ‘Frame’ format respectively. With the Traditional Time format, players have to chalk up points within a specified time limit. The Frame format will see players race to win as many frames, each with a size of 150 points, as possible. Subhas Anandan, President of Cuesports Singapore, said, “We are pleased to be awarded this opportunity to host such a prestigious sporting event and are grateful to the Singapore Sports Council and our event partners for supporting this event. The awarding of the 2007 tournament host to Singapore reflects global recognition of our commitment and dedication to be one of the premier sporting arenas in Asia. We hope that this tournament will spread greater awareness and acceptance of cue sports as a professional sport in Singapore.” Players to watch All eyes will be on the reigning champion Pankaj Advani of India who won both formats in the 2005 IBSF World Billiards Championships held in Malta.
