Singapore Fashion Designers Contest 2007 (SFDC)

Each year, one of the most anticipated events during Singapore Fashion Week is the Singapore Fashion Designers Contest (SFDC). Over the years, the contest has been an important platform to launch the career of up-and-coming fashion designers. Many of the finalists and winners of SFDC have either successfully established their own retail labels or are in a fashion-related business: Leslie Chia (1992 winner now designing under PIMABS); Jonathan Seow (1997) designs under the label Woods & Woods; K.Mi Huang (2001) designs under the label Womb and Madeleine Wong (2003), one half of the design label, Posse.

Once again, the talent search is on and is open to all citizens and permanent residents between 16 to 35years (in Dec 2007). After various rounds of vigorous judging, the finals were culminated in a catwalk presentation of the finished apparel which held on 13 October 2007 at VivoCity Shopping Centre.

This year winner’s, Mr. Chia Wei Choong receives a cash award of S$8000 from VivoCity, a BA (Hons) Fashion Design scholarship sponsored by Raffles Design Institute and an internship programme overseas.

“This year’s entries consist of a myriad of different thoughts and visions under the same theme: Changing Patterns. This year, we are seeing a wider range of interpretations, which shows a greater awareness in terms of personal style and vision. It shows that Singapore designers have taken another step forward to where they want to be,” said Mr. Thomas Tan.

For SFDC, a total of forty-one (41) entries were received. The adjudicating panel is headed by SFDC chairperson Mr Thomas Tan, and is joined by C0-Chairperson or SFW Mr David Wang, Ms Grace Lee of NuYou Magazine and Ms Adelyn Cheong of Robinsons and Co for interviews and assessment.

The winner and the first runner-up, Mr. Franco Tan will also represent Singapore in the Asian Young Fashion Designers Contest (AYFDC).
