The Singapore Hotel association (SHA) has organised an award presentation ceremony to recognise exemplary service staff from the hospitality sector. Some 1,900 service staff from the hospitality sector (comprising of hotels, serviced apartments and country clubs) have been singled out for the National Excellent Service Award (Silver, Gold and STAR) presented by SPRING Singapore and seven industry lead bodies -- Singapore Hotel Association (SHA), Association of Singapore Attractions (ASA), Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS), Land Transport Authority (LTA), National Association of Travel Agents Singapore (NATAS), Singapore Retailers Association (SRA) and Restaurant Association of Singapore (RAS).

EXSA is supported by the Consumers Association of Singapore, the National Trades Union Congress, the Food, Drinks and Allied Workers’ Union, the Singapore Manual and Mercantile Workers’ Union and the Singapore Tourism Board.

The event was graced by Guest-Of-Honour, Minister Of State, Ministry of Trade and Industry, Mr S Iswaran, who delivered the opening address and presenting the awards to the winners in the hospitality sector.

“The recent IMF/World Bank Annual Meetings demonstrated Singapore’s capabilities to not only stage a mega international event with great efficiency, but also to provide excellent service. Many delegates left with a vivid impression of the warm hospitality they experienced during their stay in Singapore.

The success of the IMF/World Bank Annual Meetings highlights the importance of our frontline service workers well-trained, and for both employers and employees to be committed to service excellence. In addition to GEMS, or Go-the-Extra-Mile-for-Service movement, WDA and SPRING are developing a Singapore Customer Satisfaction Index to track and benchmark service standards for various service sectors. A GEMS accreditation scheme will also be established to recognize good service providers who meet prescribed quality service standards. I hope that through these initiatives every service will develop the mindset that “Great service begins with me”, and take great pride in their profession.” said Mr S Iswaran Minister Of State for Trade and Industry.
