BROADWAY’S MOST POPULAR MUSICAL COMES TO SINGAPORE

Andrew Lloyd Webber’s THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA - the musical already seen by more than 80 million people throughout the world – is making a triumphant return to Singapore.

THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA will open at the Esplanade Theatre on 23 March 2007 for a strictly limited season.

Andrew Lloyd-Webber’s phenomenal hit first burst onto the London stage 20 years ago, and continues to play to full houses nightly in London, New York and around the world. THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA has been performed in more than 20 countries, including the USA, Japan, Canada, Austria, Germany, Sweden, Australia, Denmark, Hungary, Spain and Singapore back in 1995.

As Broadway’s longest-running musical, the show has been honoured with over 50 major theatre awards, including seven prestigious New York Tony Awards, among them the Tony for Best Musical, seven Drama Desk Awards and three Olivier Awards.
THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA has grossed more than S$5 billion, making it Lord Lloyd Webber’s and the world’s most successful musical. Recently the film of THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA thrilled cinema-goers around the world and a newly opened Las Vegas spectacular continues to enthrall audiences.

THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA is the heart-wrenching story of the mysterious
“Angel of Music” who lives beneath the Paris Opera House. The hideously disfigured Phantom falls in love with the young singer Christine, devoting himself to creating a new opera star while exercising a reign of terror over the Opera House’s occupants.

The prestigious and highly sought-after role of the Phantom will be played by Brad Little.
With over 2000 performances of the Phantom under his belt on Broadway, the USA and in Asia, Brad is a consummate performer who has been praised by critics and audiences alike for his emotional performance.

With 130 cast, crew and orchestra members, spectacular sets and more than 230 costumes, THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA contains some of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s most famous and stirring music, including “The Phantom of the Opera” and “Music of the Night”. The Singapore season is produced by Lunchbox Theatrical Productions and David Atkins Enterprises in association with The Really Useful Company Singapore. Between them, these producers have been responsible for numerous outstanding musicals in Singapore over recent years including Cats, Miss Saigon, Fame, Riverdance, Saturday Night Fever, Singin’ in the Rain, Oliver, Stomp and Chicago, to name but a few. Tim McFarlane, Managing Director of The Really Useful Company Asia Pacific, said, "We are delighted after an absence of 12 years to be bringing THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA back to Singapore and for the show to be presented in the Esplanade Theatre. The Singapore season is part of a very successful Asian tour by the International Touring Production that has seen the show play in Shanghai, Seoul and Taipei to capacity audiences. The cast of the production comes from the USA, UK, Australia, South Africa and Korea, including Brad Little playing the role of the Phantom. The Really Useful Company is pleased to be working with James Cundall and David Atkins in bringing this thrilling theatrical spectacle to Singapore."

James Cundall, Chief Executive of Lunchbox Theatrical Productions, said, “To present the world’s most popular musical in Singapore has been a long-term dream. It is a superb show which epitomizes all that is great about musical theatre – unbelievable music, a moving story, lavish sets and costumes, and most importantly, unrivalled audience entertainment.

THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA is a world-wide sensation which will take Singapore
audiences on an unforgettable musical theatre journey”. David Atkins of David Atkins Enterprises, said, “It seems fitting that DAE after producing the Asian Games Ceremonies is moving on in 2007 to co- produce the best Musical in Asia next
year – THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA - in Singapore. THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA is arguably one of the most successful Musicals of all time and DAE is proud to be associated with what we are sure will be its best season ever in Singapore".
Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical is based upon the novel Le Fantome De L'Opera by Gaston Leroux. Original London production by Cameron Mackintosh and The Really Useful Theatre Company Limited.
