| Notre Dame de Paris |
The musical "Notre Dame de Paris", featuring principals from the original cast, will play to audiences of more than 4,000 each night at the Singapore Indoor Stadium in November 2006. Following sell-out performances in Korea and Taiwan, this will be the rock opera's debut in South East Asia, playing an extensive season that begins on 03 November 2006. Presented by show promoters NDPK Pte Ltd, this will also be the first show produced by this company in Singapore. The show promoters predict that this unique interpretation of Victor Hugo's compelling story of love and betrayal will take Singapore by storm, breaking box office records as it has in every venue on its world tour. Since premiering at the "Palais des Congres" in Paris, France in September 1998, the musical has attracted audiences of more than 3 million in France alone. It has also been staged over 3000 times in 13 other countries, including Italy, Britain and the United States, receiving standing ovations every night. During last year's run in Korea, enthusiasts even set up their own national fan club, gathering to view the show's DVD and learn French! Faithful to Victor Hugo's classic novel “Notre Dame de Paris”, the show tells the emotionally charged story of the unfortunate Bell Ringer, Quasimodo's hopeless devotion to the beautiful gypsy Esmeralda and her downfall at the hands of Frollo, the provost of the cathedral who falls victim to an overwhelming desire for this innocent free spirit. With new translations of Luc Plamondon's original French lyrics (developed specifically for the Singapore/Australia leg of the show's world tour), the beautiful melodies will leave a long lasting impression on local audiences. Featuring more than 54 vivid arias of operatic beauty and resonance, the characters are brought to life through stunning vocal performances and visual spectacle - courtesy of the show's seven principal artistes. Acrobatic contemporary dance choreography by Martino Muller, renowned as a distinguished modern dance visionary, contrasts with the almost classical clarity of the vocal interpretations to create an audience experience reminiscent of French cirque. Dancers appear to be flying onstage under fantastic arcs and circles of lighting, freely incorporating gymnastics, contemporary and even break dance moves into their repertoire – at one moment whirling across the floor in a series of pirouettes, and the next tumbling from a bungee rope high above the stage. Fitting the majestic setting of the Singapore Indoor Stadium, the show will also be presented on a grand scale. The modern impressionistic stage set features a 12 metre high 'climbing wall' representing the façade of the grand cathedral of Notre Dame as well as the famous Bastille prison in Paris. This amazing edifice is also the platform for a series of stunning acrobatic routines that will leave the audience breathless. Technically, the musical stands out because of the masterful staging and artistic integrity of director Gilles Maheu, who has revived the 170-year-old classic with contemporary touches and deft inspiration. But for audiences in Singapore, Notre Dame de Paris will stand out simply because it will be the best musical that they have ever seen About Notre Dame de Paris
