Director's Biography
Benny Lim is an arts practitioner based in Singapore and has many experiences
including directing, producing, curating, writing, educating, researching
and lighting. Benny has many directed notable plays such as "Existence" which
collaborated with local renowned poet, Cyril Wong, weaving poems into dramatic
representations. Due to overwhelming responses, this play was run three times
in Singapore and once in Malaysia in two years. Benny was featured in Time magazine
for this creation. "Eston" saw another collaboration, between Benny and Stella
Kon, renowned veteran local playwright. Benny was the artistic director of two
arts events locally, namely, "The Fringe Festival 05" by The Fun Stage as well
as "Initiation
International".
In June 2003, Benny produced "Heavenly Cakes and Sentimental Flowers", a well-received
multimedia exhibition by NAC-Shell Scholar, Brian Gothong Tan. For a first
solo exhibition by the artist, Benny has managed to secure the full support
of Singapore Art Museum for the event as well as the competitive National Arts
Council's New Media Arts Grant to run the project. In December 2004, Benny produced "Remembering
Sergei", a classical concert at The Esplanade Recital Studio by renowned local
pianist, Shane Thio and violinist, Chan Yoong Han to a full house. In April
2004, Benny produced "Lovers' Words", a controversial Mandarin play, also played
to a full house at Esplanade Theatre Studio.
Benny has also been featured in Straits Times Life! (April 2004) for his
successful marketing strategy in bringing a Mandarin play to a full house
in Singapore. In September 2004, Benny managed the profile of two production
tours overseas; "Lovers' Words" to the prestigious 5th Chinese Drama Festival
in Yunnan, China and "The Woman" to Hong Kong Fringe Club. "Death.Mother" (April
2005) was presented as an invitation by Performance Studies International#11
held in Brown University, USA) to a house of arts academics as well as artists
from different parts of the world.
Benny Lim is currently the Artistic Director of The Fun Stage.
